Implied Odds
Potential future winnings to factor into a call
Definition
Implied odds are the additional future winnings a player can hope to extract on later streets if they complete their draw. They allow you to call a bet even when the immediate pot odds don't justify the call, if the potential future winnings more than compensate. Implied odds are highest with hands that have strong hidden potential: sets (a very disguised hand), flushes (strong value potential), and straights on dry boards. They're less valuable with transparent hands (like top pair) that won't extract much when they improve. Calculating implied odds requires estimating: the probability of completing the draw, the available opponent stack, and the probability the opponent pays if you complete. An opponent who stacks off easily with medium hands increases your implied odds. A tight opponent who folds often reduces them.
Flop J♠9♠2♥, you have 8♠7♠ (flush draw + gutshot). Pot odds = 20% but your equity is ~45% (9 flush outs + 4 gutshot = ~45% with 2 cards to come). Here implied odds aren't the issue — you're already profitable. But with only 4 outs (~16%), implied odds become decisive.
