Why You Keep Forgetting Your Poker Ranges (And How to Fix It)

You spent a whole evening studying your charts. Everything made perfect sense. Two weeks later you're at the table, a player opens from CO, you're on the BTN with KJo… and you hesitate. Again.

This isn't a lack of effort or a bad memory. It's how the brain normally works — and there are exactly three causes behind your forgetting. Knowing them is already half the cure.

Cause #1 — The forgetting curve

It's the best-documented phenomenon in memory research, described by Hermann Ebbinghaus back in 1885: without review, you lose most of what you learn within a few days. The drop is steep in the first 24 hours, then it slows down.

Translated into poker: your Sunday study session is already largely erased by Wednesday. It's not that you studied badly — it's that you did nothing in between.

What flattens that curve isn't studying longer, it's studying more often, in shorter bursts. A two-hour evening produces far less durable memory than six ten-minute sessions spread across three weeks. That's the spacing effect, and it's the foundation of spaced repetition.

Cause #2 — Interference between your ranges

This is the cause nobody mentions, and it's often the most brutal one.

Your ranges look alike. Almost every hand you open from the CO, you also open from the BTN: the second range contains the first and adds a further layer of hands on top. Your 3-bet range from the BB against a BTN isn't far from the one you use against a CO. When two memories are close together, they contaminate each other: that's interference. The result is that you never mix up KJo and 72o — you hesitate precisely on the borderline hands, the ones separating one range from its neighbour.

Two practical consequences:

  • Don't learn two neighbouring ranges on the same day. Studying the BTN open and the CO open in one session is manufacturing confusion. Let the first one consolidate before attacking the second.
  • Work the edges, not the core. Nobody forgets that AA opens on the BTN. What costs you money are the hands that flip from one position to the next. That's where your time should go.

Cause #3 — The illusion of knowing

You reread your chart, everything looks obvious, you conclude that you know it. This is the most expensive trap, because it hands you confidence before it costs you chips.

The reason is simple: rereading is recognition. At the table you're asked for recall — rebuilding the range without the chart in front of you. These are two different cognitive operations, and succeeding at the first proves nothing about the second.

The protocol that fixes all three causes

All three causes share a single antidote, which comes down to three rules.

1. Space it out instead of cramming. Five to ten minutes a day beats a two-hour Sunday session by a wide margin. Consistency isn't a matter of moral discipline — it's what mechanically flattens the forgetting curve.

2. Test yourself instead of rereading. Every review has to be an active recall exercise, not a reading session. If you didn't produce the answer yourself, you didn't review anything.

3. Review at the right time, not at random. Reviewing a range you've mastered is wasted time; reviewing too late means relearning from scratch. What if a range is already gone?

It happens, especially after a break of several weeks. Don't try to "catch up": a forgotten range is treated like a brand new one.
