UTG, by contrast, opens only ~15% of hands because playing from early position is a major disadvantage. **How do you build a poker range?** Start from position and stack depth, then select hands by value (pairs, broadways, suited connectors) until you reach the target frequency. A GTO strategy makes you unexploitable: no matter what your opponent does, they can't generate positive EV against you in the long run. GTO involves playing mixed ranges — sometimes raising, sometimes calling with the same hand at a precise frequency. For example, you might 3-bet AA 80% of the time and call with it 20% of the time to balance your calling range and keep your actions unpredictable. Learning GTO doesn't mean playing it perfectly — humans can't compute these equilibria in real time. But knowing the GTO fundamentals gives you a solid framework for every decision: which range to open, when to 3-bet, when to c-bet, which hands to defend. Once you have that base, you can deviate to exploit your opponents. **Example.** In GTO, you don't 3-bet only with AA and KK. You include bluffs (A5s, A4s) to balance your range and stay hard to read. Without those bluffs, your opponent can fold everything but the nuts against your 3-bet. **Should you play GTO or exploitative poker?** GTO is an unexploitable baseline, ideal against unknowns or strong players; exploitative play maximises EV against opponents who make identifiable mistakes. In practice you start from a GTO baseline and deviate when a clear opponent tendency justifies it. **Can a human play perfect GTO?** No: the exact equilibria (mixed frequencies, multiple sizings) can't be computed in your head in real time. Neither one can improve their expected result by changing strategy unilaterally — both strategies are mutually optimal. In poker, the Nash equilibrium corresponds to pure GTO strategy. Applied to push/fold (the only two actions available when the stack is very short), Nash charts indicate exactly which hands to push based on your stack in big blinds, your position, and the number of players. These charts are mathematically optimal against an opponent who also plays optimally. In Spin & Go, Nash push/fold ranges are essential because blinds rise very fast. At 15bb heads-up, Nash tells you to push ~45% of hands from the SB (which is also the button). Deviating from these charts creates exploitable weaknesses against a competent opponent. **Example.** Nash push/fold charts indicate exactly which hands to push based on your stack (in bb) to be unexploitable heads-up. At 10bb BTN vs BB, you push around 60% of hands according to Nash. **What is a Nash push/fold range?** It's the mathematically optimal all-in range when your stack is short (~≤ 15-20bb), built to be unexploitable if your opponent also responds optimally. It depends on stack in big blinds, position and the number of players still to act. **When should you use Nash charts?** Mainly in tournaments, Spin & Go and short-stacked heads-up, where push or fold are the only reasonable actions. It schedules your reviews at the optimal moment — just before you forget — to maximize retention while minimizing time spent reviewing. The principle: the better you know something, the longer the intervals between reviews. A concept you know very well will be reviewed in 30 days. A shaky one will be reviewed tomorrow. The algorithm calibrates each session to what your brain can absorb. Applied to poker ranges, SRS lets you hardwire your GTO ranges in just 5 to 10 minutes a day. You review the hands you know poorly, at the right time, until they become automatic reflexes. That's the difference between knowing your range in theory and playing it instantly under pressure. The 3-bet size varies: in position, 3x the open is common; out of position, 3.5–4x is more standard to offset the informational disadvantage. **Example.** CO opens to 2.5bb, BTN 3-bets to 8bb. A GTO BTN-vs-CO 3-bet range includes AA, KK, QQ, AKs for value, and A5s, A4s, 76s as bluffs to balance the range and make it unexploitable. **Which hands should you 3-bet?** A balanced 3-bet range mixes value hands (big pairs, AK, sometimes AQs) with bluffs chosen for their blocker value and playability (A5s-A4s, some suited hands). The value-to-bluff ratio depends on position and the opponent's range. **What size should a 3-bet be?** In position, about 3× the open is standard; out of position, 3.5-4× offsets the disadvantage of playing without information. Facing a 4-bet, the decision is usually binary: fold or all-in (5-bet jam). Calling a 4-bet with a deep stack is generally suboptimal because you play OOP with an unbalanced range. The standard 4-bet size is roughly 2.2x to 2.5x the opponent's 3-bet in position, and up to ~2.8x out of position. **Example.** BTN 3-bets, CO 4-bets to 22bb. It's the act of "continuing" your aggression on the flop, whether you connected with it or not. The c-bet can be made with a strong hand (top pair, set, draw) to extract value, or without having hit the flop (c-bet bluff) to take down the pot. The decision to c-bet depends on several factors: the board texture (dry or coordinated), who is favored by the board based on ranges, position, and the opponent's tendency to fold. In GTO, c-bet frequency and size are calibrated to the board. On a dry favorable board (A72 rainbow), the c-bet is frequent and small (25–33%). On a coordinated board unfavorable to the opener, the c-bet is less frequent. Knowing your c-bet strategy by board type is essential for solid play. **Example.** You open BTN, BB calls. The flop is A72 rainbow. You c-bet 33% of the pot. The dry board favors your range (you have more aces than BB in your opening range). A frequent, small c-bet is correct in GTO on this kind of texture. **When should you c-bet?** C-betting is frequent when the board favours your opening range (dry, high textures like A-x-x or K-x-x) and more selective on coordinated boards that favour the defender. Texture, position and range advantage matter more than whether you connected. **What c-bet size should you use?** On a dry, favourable board a small c-bet (25-33% pot) is enough to fold out air and charge marginal hands. Playing in position (IP = In Position) means acting last postflop, which is a considerable informational advantage: you see your opponents' actions before making your decision. Positions split into early position (UTG in 6-max; UTG, UTG+1, UTG+2 in full ring), middle position (HJ), late position (CO, BTN), with the blinds (SB, BB) acting afterward. The later your position, the more hands you can play profitably, because you'll have the advantage of acting after your opponents on every street. Position directly shapes range construction: BTN opens ~45% of hands, UTG only ~15%. That difference reflects the edge of playing IP postflop. Postflop, playing OOP (Out Of Position) is such a disadvantage that it can justify folding hands that would be profitable in isolation. That's why position must be built into preflop ranges from the start. **Example.** BTN (Button) is the best position because you act last on every postflop street against SB and BB. UTG is the worst position: you act first preflop and often first postflop with very little information about your opponents' ranges. **Why is position so important?** Playing in position means acting last on every postflop street: you see your opponents' actions before deciding, which improves pot control, value extraction and bluff efficiency. That's why you can play far more hands on the button than in early position. **What is the best position in poker?** The button (BTN): you act last postflop against everyone else. An action is +EV if it profits on average, -EV if it loses money in the long run. The goal in poker isn't to win every hand, but to make +EV decisions. A decision can be +EV and lose in the short term (variance), or -EV but win occasionally (luck). That's the common confusion among beginners: judging their decisions by the result, not by the quality of the decision. The EV calculation factors in: the probability of winning, the pot size, potential future bets (implied odds), and the size of the bet to call. Maximizing EV on every decision is the very definition of good poker. All GTO strategies are built to maximize total EV across every situation. **Example.** Calling an all-in with 60% equity is +EV even if you lose that specific hand. Over 1000 repetitions, that decision is profitable despite the occasional losses caused by variance. **How do you calculate the EV of a decision?** Sum every possible outcome weighted by its probability: EV = (probability of winning × amount won) − (probability of losing × amount lost). A decision is +EV if that total is positive, regardless of the result of any single hand. **Can a +EV decision lose?** Yes, in the short run, because of variance: you can make the best decision and still lose the hand. It's computed with an equity calculator (Monte Carlo algorithm or full enumeration). Equity is dynamic: it evolves with each new community card based on the possible combinations. Knowing your approximate equity is fundamental to making good calling and raising decisions — particularly to compare your equity to the pot odds and determine whether a call is profitable. Equity is calculated not hand vs hand (one specific hand against another) but above all hand vs range (one hand against the full set of hands your opponent can have in this spot). That distinction is crucial: your real equity depends on the range you assign your opponent, not on a hypothetical single hand. **Example.** AA vs KK preflop: AA has ~82% equity. 87s vs AKo preflop: 87s has about 41% equity despite facing two overcards. KQs (top pair) on a K72r board has equity that depends heavily on the opponent's range: very high (~90%) against a wide range of weaker pairs and worse-kicker kings, but much lower against a range concentrated in sets and two pairs. **What's the difference between equity and pot odds?** Equity is your percentage chance of winning the hand; pot odds are the minimum equity required for a call to be profitable. If your equity exceeds your pot odds, the call is +EV. **How do you estimate equity at the table?** Think hand vs range, not hand vs hand: count your outs (the rule of 2 and 4 approximates a draw's equity) and adjust for the opponent's plausible range. They express the minimum equity needed for the call to be profitable (break-even). If your equity exceeds the pot odds, the call is +EV. Formula: Pot Odds = Bet to call / (Pot + Opponent's bet + Bet to call). The result as a percentage = the minimum equity required. Pot odds are the basis of call/fold math in poker. If the pot odds are 25% and your equity is 30%, the call is +EV by 5% on every euro wagered. If your equity is 20%, the call is -EV by 5%. You should always compare pot odds and equity before deciding. Pot odds should also be combined with implied odds (potential future winnings) for spots where you can extract extra chips if you complete your draw. **Example.** Pot = €100, opponent bets €50. You have to call €50. The total pot after calling is €200. Your pot odds = 50/200 = 25%. You need at least 25% equity to break even on this call. **How do you calculate pot odds?** Pot odds = amount to call ÷ total pot after your call. The result is the minimum equity needed to break even. Example: calling 50 into a pot that becomes 200 after the call = 25% equity required. **Should you call when equity equals pot odds?** At the exact break-even point the call is neutral in immediate EV. You then decide on secondary factors: implied odds (future winnings if you hit), position, and the risk of being raised later in the hand. https://forge.poker/en/glossaire/potodds ### ICM **Definition.** ICM (Independent Chip Model) is a mathematical model that converts tournament chips into real money value, based on the prize pool, the paid places and each player's current stack. It's a fundamental concept for understanding tournament decisions. Under ICM, chips don't have linear value. Doubling your chips doesn't double your real equity because the value curve is concave: each additional chip is worth less than the previous one. Chips lost are worth more than chips won. That's why near the bubble or late in a tournament, hands that are profitable in chip-EV become -EV in $EV. ICM justifies very tight folds in bubble or final-table situations, even with good hands. Understanding ICM is essential for MTTs, Spin & Gos (with their variable prize pool), and SNGs. **Example.** Bubble of a tournament paying 3 out of 4 players. You have 20bb. Calling an all-in with AA can be -$EV under ICM if several short stacks are likely to bust before you, guaranteeing you the paid spot by folding. **Why are chips worth less as you win them?** Because tournament chip value is concave (the ICM model): the prize pool is finite and paid places cap the payout. Doubling your stack therefore doesn't double its real cash value — hence folds tighter than chip-EV alone would suggest. **When does ICM matter most?** Near the bubble and at pay jumps (final table), where busting or surviving changes cash value a lot. With so few chips, limping and calling are no longer mathematically justified: the only correct decision is either to push all-in, or to fold directly. Nash push/fold charts indicate exactly which hands to push based on your stack (in bb), your position (BTN, SB, etc.) and the number of active players. These charts are computed to be mathematically unexploitable — deviating from these ranges creates EV leaks that competent opponents can exploit. In Spin & Go and the late stages of MTTs, mastering push/fold charts is crucial. Blinds rise fast and most important decisions happen under time pressure. Memorizing your push/fold charts and playing them automatically is a major competitive edge. **Example.** At 10bb on the BTN heads-up, your push range is about 60% according to Nash. At 15bb 3-handed on the BTN, it tightens to ~25%: two opponents remain behind, one of whom may cover you. The shorter the stack, the wider the range — at 5bb heads-up, the SB already shoves ~70% of hands, because the blinds eat the stack too fast to wait. **At what stack should you play push/fold?** Generally under ~15-20bb, and almost systematically under ~10bb: limping or calling becomes mathematically dominated, so the best decision is push all-in or fold. The exact threshold depends on the format and number of players. **Do push/fold ranges change by position?** Yes: the more players left to act behind you, the tighter your push range. Forced big blinds don't count. It's the most basic indicator of an opponent's playing style. A low VPIP (15–20%) indicates a tight player who only plays good hands. A high VPIP (35%+) is a loose player who plays too many hands. In 6-max Cash Game, a VPIP of 22–26% is typical of a solid TAG (Tight-Aggressive). On the BTN, a good player's VPIP can climb to 45%+ because position justifies playing many hands. VPIP alone isn't enough to qualify a player — you always have to analyze it together with PFR to understand whether the player is passive or aggressive. **Example.** A VPIP 15 player is very tight. VPIP 30 is loose. In 6-max, VPIP 22–26 with PFR 18–22 corresponds to a solid TAG profile. A VPIP 40 with PFR 8 is a passive player who calls too much. **What is the difference between VPIP and PFR?** VPIP counts every hand played voluntarily, calls included; PFR counts only the ones raised preflop. The gap between the two is what tells you the most: 3 to 5 points means an aggressive, selective player, while more than 10-15 points reveals a passive player who calls far too much. **What VPIP should you aim for?** In 6-max cash, a solid profile sits around 22-26% VPIP for 18-22% PFR. In full ring it drops to roughly 15-20 / 13-17. It's the indicator of a player's preflop aggression. The VPIP/PFR ratio is very revealing of playing style. A PFR close to the VPIP means the player raises almost every hand they play: aggressive TAG profile. A PFR well below the VPIP means the player often calls without initiating aggression: passive profile (fish or calling station). In 6-max Cash Game, a PFR of 18–22% with a VPIP of 22–26% corresponds to a good TAG. A very low PFR (5–8%) with a VPIP of 25%+ indicates a player who calls too much and raises too little — a tendency easily exploited by increasing your c-bet and barrel frequency. **Example.** VPIP 25 / PFR 20: an aggressive player who almost always raises. VPIP 30 / PFR 10: a passive player who calls too much — widen your value bets and cut your bluffs (he calls too much for a bluff to profit), and respect his resistance: when a player this passive starts raising, he almost always has a real hand. https://forge.poker/en/glossaire/pfr ### SPR **Definition.** SPR (Stack-to-Pot Ratio) is the ratio between the effective stack (the smaller of the two remaining stacks) and the pot size on the flop. It indicates how many times the pot would fit into the remaining stack, which guides postflop decisions. A low SPR (below 4) means the stacks are short relative to the pot. In this setup, it's correct to commit the stacks with medium hands like top pair. A high SPR (above 10) means there are a lot of chips left to play — you need a very strong hand to go all-in because the potential losses are large. SPR should influence your preflop decisions: by adjusting the sizing of your opens and 3-bets, you control the postflop SPR. A 3-bet pot creates a low SPR that simplifies decisions with premium hands. Understanding SPR is essential to avoid ending up in uncomfortable postflop situations. **Example.** Pot = €10, effective stacks = €50. SPR = 50/10 = 5. With this SPR, top pair top kicker is generally strong enough to play for stacks. Unlike GTO, which is optimal against any opponent, exploit is maximally profitable against a particular player but can in turn be exploited by an opponent who adjusts. Exploiting consists of identifying opponent leaks and targeting them directly: if a player folds too often to c-bets, you increase your c-bet-bluff frequency. If a player calls too much on the river, you value-bet thinner and bluff less. If a player 3-bets too much, you 4-bet wider. The best approach is to learn GTO as a baseline, then deviate from it to exploit imbalanced opponents. In online poker with a HUD, opponent stats let you identify these imbalances quickly. **Example.** Your opponent has a fold-to-c-bet of 70% (too high — optimal is ~45–50%). You go from 50% to 80% c-bet frequency against him. The distinctive feature of Spin & Gos is the random prize pool: depending on the room and buy-in, the multiplier can range from 2x to 10,000x the initial stake. The vast majority of games are settled at 2x, but rare jackpots can reach considerable sums. Spin & Go strategy rests almost entirely on Nash push/fold charts. From the very first levels, stacks are short and decisions come down to: push or fold? Memorizing your charts by position and stack depth is indispensable to play this format profitably. **Example.** In a €10 Spin & Go at 10bb BTN heads-up, your push range is ~60% according to Nash. It's the opposite of a capped range, which is missing the strongest hands (the nuts) and therefore tops out at medium-strength hands. Polarized ranges are typical of big postflop sizings (bet 75%+, pot, overbet). The logic is simple: with a big bet, you give the opponent bad odds to call — so they must fold often, which makes your bluffs profitable. And your value hands extract the maximum. Medium hands aren't worth betting that big because they don't need protection or maximum extraction. The bluff frequency in a polarized range is calculated based on the bet size to make the opponent indifferent between calling and folding (a GTO concept). **Example.** On the river with an overbet (2x the pot), your range is polarized: either the completed flush, or a total bluff with nothing. In GTO, bluffs aren't impulsive actions but calculated components of ranges to maintain balance and make your strategy unexploitable. An optimal GTO bluff targets the hands the opponent can legitimately fold — those with little equity against your value range. Here's why — and what to use instead. #### What Anki does very well Credit where it's due. Anki's spaced repetition algorithm is solid, battle-tested across millions of users, and the principle it applies is the right one: review just before you forget, stretch the intervals with every success. For vocabulary, formulas or dates, it's unbeatable. The engine isn't the problem. **The problem is that poker doesn't fit inside a flashcard.** #### Limit #1 — The granularity problem A range is 169 hands on a 13×13 grid. When you try to turn that into cards, you only have two options, and both are bad. **Option A: one card per range** (front "BTN open 100bb", back an image of the grid). You create ten of them in an hour. Except that at review time, you flip the card, look at the image and think "yes, I knew that". You did **not** rebuild it — you recognised it. That's precisely the illusion of knowing, the most expensive bias in all range learning. **Option B: one card per hand** (front "KJo on the BTN facing a CO open", back "fold"). Now you're genuinely doing active recall — but do the maths: 169 hands × 10 ranges = **1,690 cards to build by hand**. You'll spend more time creating your deck than learning it. And you'll learn isolated hands out of context, never seeing the **shape** of the range — which is exactly what lets you generalise to a new situation. There's no good middle option in Anki, because the unit it manipulates is the card, not the grid. #### Limit #2 — Self-grading is subjective In Anki, **you** decide whether you knew it: Again / Hard / Good / Easy. For vocabulary that works — you objectively know whether you retrieved the word. For a range it's unworkable. You got 154 hands right out of 169: is that "Good" or "Hard"? And if all 15 mistakes are borderline hands — that is, exactly the ones that matter — the right answer is "Again", but your brain will tell you "Good, I had the essentials". The result: you over-grade yourself, the algorithm stretches the intervals too far, and you lose the range without noticing. #### Limit #3 — Anki doesn't know poker Anki has no idea what a [position](https://forge.poker/en/glossaire/position), an effective stack or a frequency is. You don't have to compute that at the table — but knowing where it comes from makes the range memorable instead of arbitrary. #### The right order: understand, then automate Here's the protocol that reconciles both camps. **Step 1 — Read the range and look for its logic.** Before memorizing anything, look at its shape on the grid: the block of pairs, the suited diagonal, the tail of connectors, the offsuit zone that stops dead.
